Hoi An in July: Weather, Crowds and Travel Tips from Da Nang Airport

Hoi An in July is hot, mostly dry, and refreshingly quiet for international visitors. The UNESCO-listed ancient town of yellow-walled shophouses, lantern-lit streets, and centuries-old temples sits 30 kilometres south of Da Nang Airport on the banks of the Thu Bon River, and July offers something the peak season cannot: dropping hotel prices, tailors with time on their hands, and beaches at their best.

This guide covers what to expect in Hoi An in July: weather, crowd levels, airport arrival, transport from Da Nang, top activities, and practical tips.

Hoi An Crowds in July (and Why It’s Quieter Than You’d Think)

February to April is the real peak tourist season. July, by contrast, is one of the quietest months for international visitors. That means fewer crowds in the Old Town, shorter waits at restaurants, and better rates on hotels and tailoring.

July does bring a second wave: domestic Vietnamese tourists on school holidays. Weekends get noticeably busier, especially around the Full Moon Lantern Festival nights. If you want the quietest experience, aim for weekdays in early July.

The trade-off is heat. But if you plan around it, July offers something the peak months do not: room to breathe, lower prices, and the best beach conditions of the year.

Arriving at Da Nang Airport (DAD) for Hoi An

There is no airport in Hoi An. All flights land at Da Nang International Airport, Vietnam’s third-busiest airport. The terminal is compact, signage is bilingual, and Hoi An is a 45-minute drive south.

For a full walkthrough of the terminal, see the Da Nang Airport guide.

Immigration

International flights land at Terminal 2. On a quiet day, passport control takes 10 to 15 minutes. During July peak season, when waves of flights arrive from Korea, China, Singapore, and Australia at similar times, queues can hit 30 to 45 minutes. Have your passport, e-visa, and hotel address ready. There is no ATM inside the immigration zone, so carry some cash.

To skip the queue, Fast Track Vietnam’s Da Nang service puts an agent by your side who walks you through priority immigration lanes and helps with luggage. During peak July arrivals, this saves the most time.

Getting from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An in July

Grab is the default. Download the app before you fly and make sure you have mobile data ready on landing. The ride takes about 45 minutes and costs 300,000-350,000 VND ($12-$14).

For taxis, stick to Mai Linh (green) or VinaSun (white) and insist on the meter. Shuttle buses run during the day for around 120,000 VND but take longer and follow fixed routes. Many Hoi An hotels offer free airport shuttle pickups if you book in advance.

Best Things to Do in Hoi An in July

Hoi An Ancient Town: The heart of Hoi An. Walk the narrow lanes past the Japanese Covered Bridge, Chinese assembly halls, and old merchant houses. A ticket (120,000 VND) covers five heritage site entries. Go before 8 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the worst heat.

An Bang Beach: Four kilometres from the Old Town. Soft sand, sunbeds, beachfront bars, and calmer water than Da Nang’s beaches. The best July swimming spot near Hoi An. Grab from the Old Town: 30,000-50,000 VND.

Cua Dai Beach: Just past An Bang. Wider, quieter, lined with resorts. Good for families who want space without the bar scene.

Bay Mau Coconut Forest: Basket boat rides through palm-lined waterways. Guides spin the boats and sing. Touristy but fun. Best in the morning before it gets crowded.

Tra Que Vegetable Village: A working herb and vegetable farm three kilometres from the Old Town. Cycling tours, cooking classes, and foot baths using fresh herbs. A cool morning activity.

Full Moon Lantern Festival: On the 14th of each lunar month, the Old Town switches off electric lights and glows with silk lanterns and candles on the river. Free to attend. The July full moon falls in the second half of the month in [YY]; check the lunar calendar for your travel dates.

My Son Sanctuary: A UNESCO World Heritage cluster of Cham temple ruins, 40 km southwest of Hoi An. Half-day trip. Go early morning before the heat. Allow three hours including travel.

What to Eat in Hoi An in July

  • Cao Lau: Thick rice noodles, sliced pork, greens, crispy croutons, and a small amount of rich broth. Made with water from a specific local well. Only found in Hoi An.
  • Banh Mi: Hoi An’s version is arguably the best in Vietnam. Crispy baguette, pate, pork, pickled vegetables, chilli. Banh Mi Phuong and Madam Khanh are the most famous stalls.
  • White Rose (Banh Bao Banh Vac): Translucent shrimp dumplings shaped like roses. A Hoi An original, made by one family for generations.
  • Com Ga (chicken rice): Turmeric-yellow rice, shredded chicken, fresh herbs, and a side of soup. Light enough for a hot July lunch.
  • Mi Quang: Turmeric noodles with shrimp, pork, quail egg, peanuts, herbs, and just enough broth to coat. Shared with Da Nang but prepared slightly differently here.
  • Where: Hoi An Central Market for daytime street food. Nguyen Hoang Night Market for evening grazing along the river.

Practical Tips

  • Sun and hydration: Reef-safe sunscreen, reapply often, carry water. The UV index in central Vietnam is high from May to August.
  • Outdoor hours: Before 10 AM and after 3:30 PM. Spend midday at the beach, by the pool, or in an air-conditioned cafe.
  • Old Town ticket: 120,000 VND for five heritage site entries. Buy at kiosks near the main entry points. Valid for 24 hours.
  • Tailors: Summer is quieter, so expect faster turnaround (24-48 hours for most items) and more room to negotiate prices.
  • Cash: Most Old Town vendors and street stalls are cash-only. Withdraw VND from an ATM in town for better rates than the airport.
  • Rain: Afternoon showers are short and predictable. Carry a light rain jacket and keep going.
  • Transport: Download Grab before you arrive. Cycling is the best way to explore the Old Town and surrounding villages. Rentals cost 30,000-50,000 VND per day.
  • Book early: July and August weekends fill up, especially around lantern festival nights. Book 30-60 days ahead. If you are splitting time between Hoi An and Da Nang, see the guide to Best Hotels in Da Nang.
  • Departures: For international flights during summer, arrive at Da Nang Airport at least 3 hours before departure. The terminal gets busy, and check-in and security take longer during peak season.

Skip the Queue at Da Nang Airport in July
