Vietnam Airport Security Lines: Wait Times and Faster Options

Passengers waiting in line at airport security in Vietnam

Leaving Vietnam used to mean bracing for a long immigration queue. These days at Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN), the security line is often the longer wait. Even APEC Business Travel Card holders, who breeze through immigration on their own lane, still queue for security like everyone else, and that can push their total wait past an hour.

With Fast Track Vietnam, an agent meets you after check-in and walks you through both the priority immigration and security lanes at SGN, HAN and Da Nang (DAD), so you get airside in 10-20 minutes instead of losing an hour in line.

Where Security Fits in Your Departure

At Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN), security screening comes after immigration. A long security line therefore eats into the time you thought you had saved once your passport was stamped.

StepWhat happensWhat to have ready
1. Airline check-inDrop checked bags, collect your boarding passPassport, booking reference
2. Exit immigrationAn officer checks your passport and visa, then stamps you outPassport, boarding pass
3. Security screeningCarry-on bags go through the X-ray, you walk through the body scannerLiquids bag, laptop and power banks within easy reach

Layouts differ slightly by airport and terminal, so follow the signage and staff directions on the day.

Why Security Lines Are Now Longer Than Immigration

Immigration has seen steady upgrades, including New Immigration Lanes at Noi Bai. Security screening still depends on every passenger unpacking items into trays, and each re-scan holds up the whole lane.

These are the main things that slow a security line:

  • Power bank checks. Since 1 July 2026, Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority limits each passenger to two power banks of up to 100Wh, carried in hand luggage only. Officers may stop a bag if a power bank’s capacity isn’t clear.
  • Liquids over the limit. Water bottles, sunscreen and toiletries above 100ml are a common reason for a bag search.
  • Electronics left in bags. A laptop or tablet inside a backpack usually means a second scan.
  • Jackets, belts and watches. Each extra tray adds time for everyone behind you.
  • Departure waves. Many international flights leave close together, so passengers reach screening in surges rather than a steady flow.

Capacity is growing too. Noi Bai’s expanded Terminal 2 went from two to three screening zones and added new 3D X-ray scanners in December 2025. More lanes help, but packing is still the one factor you control.

APEC Card Holders Still Queue at Security

APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders can use the designated APEC lane at immigration, which is usually much shorter than the main queue. Security has no equivalent lane, so card holders join the same screening line as everyone else. On a busy morning, the total time from check-in to airside can still run past an hour, even with the APEC lane.

When Security Queues Peak

Security queues follow flight schedules, not the clock alone. Use this table to judge how much buffer you need.

Time windowWhy it gets busyWhat to do
Early morning (6-9 AM)Regional and long-haul morning departures leave close togetherArrive around 3 hours before departure
Late afternoon (4-7 PM)Evening departure wave, plus rush-hour traffic to the airportLeave extra time for the drive
Friday afternoon, Sunday eveningWeekend travel adds to regular trafficCheck in online the day before
July-August, DecemberSchool holidays and year-end tripsTreat every departure as a peak departure
Tet and public holidaysDomestic and international peaks overlapCheck dates in our Vietnam public holidays [YY] guide

Midday departures, roughly 11 AM to 2 PM, are typically quieter. Queue times can change quickly, so treat any pattern as a guide rather than a promise.

How to Pack So You Clear Screening in One Pass

Most delays at the belt come from a handful of items. Sort them before you leave your hotel.

  1. Bag your liquids. Keep each container to 100ml or less, up to 1 litre in total, in one clear resealable bag. See Vietnam Airlines’ liquids rules for exceptions.
  2. Check your power banks. Carry no more than two, each 100Wh or less, in your carry-on. Protect each one with its original packaging, tape over the terminals or a separate pouch.
  3. Keep electronics on top. Put your laptop and tablet in an outer pocket so they come out in seconds.
  4. Dress for the trays. Choose slip-on shoes and minimal metal, and take your jacket off before you reach the belt.
  5. Leave duty-free sealed. Liquids bought airside stay in their sealed, tamper-evident bag until you land.
  6. Bring paperwork for medicine. Liquid prescription medicine can exceed the 100ml limit if you carry the prescription.
  7. Empty your water bottle. Refill it airside after screening.

Power bank note: units between 100Wh and 160Wh need prior airline approval, and spare power banks cannot go in checked luggage. Full details are in this summary of the July [YY] power bank rules.

How Early to Arrive at Each Airport

We suggest arriving about 3 hours before an international departure at SGN and HAN. That is our recommendation, not an airport rule, and your airline sets its own check-in cut-off.

AirportSuggested arrival (international)Departure fast track covers
Tan Son Nhat (SGN)Around 3 hoursImmigration + security
Noi Bai (HAN)Around 3 hoursImmigration + security
Da Nang (DAD)2.5-3 hoursImmigration + security
Phu Quoc (PQC)Around 2.5 hoursImmigration only

Each airport has its own service details. See the Noi Bai airport fast track page, the Da Nang airport service page and the Phu Quoc departure options for meeting points and inclusions.

How Departure Fast Track Covers Security

At SGN, HAN and DAD, departure fast track covers both checkpoints. Our agent meets you after check-in, walks you through the priority immigration lane, then takes you through priority security screening. At Phu Quoc (PQC), the service covers immigration only.

For APEC card holders: if you already use the APEC lane at immigration, the time you save with departure fast track comes mainly at security. At SGN, HAN and DAD, our agent takes you through the priority security lane, which is where card holders otherwise wait the longest.

Prices are per traveller, and the 11.6% taxes and fees are shown openly at checkout. Book at least 4 hours before departure. The fast track pricing page lists every add-on.

The service does not control airline check-in queues (unless you add priority check-in), how officers screen your bags, or the immigration officer’s decision. It helps most on tight morning departures, when travelling with elderly parents, and for corporate and MICE groups.

Fast Track Vietnam is recognised as Vietnam’s gold standard for fast track services by the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).

FAQs About Security Lines at Vietnam Airports

Is there security screening when I arrive in Vietnam?

No passenger security screening applies on arrival. After immigration you collect your bags and pass through customs, where bags may be X-rayed. For arrival queues, see our Tan Son Nhat immigration wait times guide.

Do I need to take my laptop out at security?

In most lanes, yes. Place laptops and tablets in a separate tray unless staff tell you otherwise. Newer scanners may change this over time, so follow the officer’s instructions on the day.

How many power banks can I bring on a flight from Vietnam?

From 1 July 2026, each passenger may carry up to two power banks of 100Wh or less, in hand luggage only. Units between 100Wh and 160Wh need airline approval first.

Can I bring a water bottle through security?

Only if it is empty or holds 100ml or less. Empty it before screening and refill it airside.

Does fast track cover security screening at Phu Quoc?

No. Departure fast track at Phu Quoc (PQC) covers immigration only. At Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai and Da Nang it covers both immigration and security.

How early should I book departure fast track?

Book at least 4 hours before your flight. Booking earlier gives our team more time to confirm your meeting point by WhatsApp or iMessage

Does fast track guarantee I’ll make my flight?

No. Priority lanes typically bring both checkpoints down to 10-20 minutes, depending on Get Through Security With Time to Spare

A packed security hall is the last thing you want between you and your gate, especially on an early flight or with family in tow. Pack by the checklist above, arrive with a real buffer, and you avoid most of the stress.

I have an APEC Business Travel Card. Do I still need departure fast track?

Your ABTC gives you a designated lane at immigration, but not at security. At SGN, HAN and DAD, departure fast track adds a priority security lane, and that is where card holders can still lose an hour on busy days. At Phu Quoc (PQC), the service covers immigration only, so it adds less for ABTC holders.

Final Thoughts

If the timing is tight, Fast Track Vietnam can help. At Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai and Da Nang, an agent meets you after check-in and walks you through the priority immigration and security lanes. Most travellers are airside in 10-20 minutes, depending on flight load.
