The Vietnam Mountain Marathon returns to Sapa from 17 to 20 September 2026, its 13th edition and one of only ten races worldwide carrying World Trail Majors status.
Registration for 2026 is already sold out, so this guide is as useful for spectators and support crews as it is for runners already holding a bib. Here are the dates, the six distances on offer, and how to get from Hanoi to the start line without losing a day of your trip.

Race Distances and Courses
All distances start and finish in the Sapa area, with every runner from every distance sharing the same finish line.

What Makes the Course Distinct
VMM courses cut through golden rice terraces at harvest season, bamboo forest, and villages belonging to the Black Hmong, Red Dao and Tay ethnic groups. Every distance finishes at Topas Ecolodge, a hilltop lodge with two infinity pools that doubles as the race’s finish-line party venue.

This Year’s Elite Field
The 2026 elite field is shaping up to be the strongest in VMM’s history, particularly in the two distances that count toward World Trail Majors ranking points: the 50km and the 100km.
To earn a spot on the World Trail Majors leaderboard, runners need to complete two races from the series within the year. A number of 2026 VMM entrants are pairing Sapa with other majors on the calendar, including Ultra Trail Cape Town, Transgrancanaria, Hong Kong 100, Mt. Fuji 100 and the GPT 100 Miler, which is drawing a genuinely international start list to the mountains outside Sapa.
The 50km looks set for a fast year on both sides of the field. Last year’s course records there were set by elite Chinese runners: the women’s record went to a runner ranked in the world’s top ten, and the men’s record was set by a runner with one of the highest performance rankings in the field. Organisers expect this year’s times to push close to those marks again.
In the 100km, two runners who recently broke course records at an ultra event in Dalat have already confirmed their entry, pairing VMM with Ultra Trail Cape Town as their second World Trail Majors race for the year. They will race against a deep international field alongside Vietnam’s own top ultra talent.
Getting From Hanoi to Sapa
Almost every international runner starts this trip the same way: landing in Hanoi, then covering the roughly 300km northwest to Sapa.
By Road
A private car or Grab takes 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and weather. This is the most flexible option for runners carrying race gear, and the easiest to time around a flight arrival.
By Overnight Train
A sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai runs overnight, followed by a roughly 1-hour transfer to Sapa. It saves a hotel night but adds a transfer, so build in buffer time before bib collection.
Most runners overlook one thing: the Hanoi leg of the trip matters just as much as the Sapa leg. After a long-haul flight into Noi Bai International Airport, adding hours in an immigration queue before a 5 to 6 hour onward drive is not how anyone wants to start race week.
Our Noi Bai Airport guide covers immigration, terminals and facilities, and our Hanoi Airport to city centre guide breaks down transport options once you land.

Race Week Prep Tips
- Arrive in Sapa 1 to 2 days early: altitude, cold mornings and travel fatigue all affect race-day performance more than most runners expect
- Pack for both extremes: warm layers for the 5 to 6 AM starts, plus light gear for midday sun on exposed ridgelines
- Check the mandatory kit list: longer distances require specific safety gear, checked at bib collection
- Book Sapa accommodation early: race weekend sells out hotels and homestays well ahead of September
- Get travel insurance that covers trail running: standard travel policies often exclude ultra-distance events
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vietnam Mountain Marathon 2026 still open for registration?
No. The 2026 edition is sold out. Check the official Vietnam Trail Series site for any waitlist or bib transfer options closer to race day.
What is the weather like in Sapa in September?
Expect cool mornings around 15 to 18 degrees Celsius, warmer afternoons, and a real chance of mist or light rain. Conditions can change quickly at altitude.
Do I need travel insurance for VMM?
Yes. Look for a policy that specifically covers trail running or ultra-endurance events, since many standard travel policies exclude them.
Arriving in Hanoi Before Race Week
Whether you are running the 10km or the 100 miles, race week starts the moment you land in Hanoi. A slow immigration queue at Noi Bai eats into the buffer you need for the drive or train to Sapa, especially if you are trying to arrive with a day or two to spare before bib collection.
Fast Track Vietnam‘s airport assistance service gets you through priority immigration lanes and handles your bags from the moment you land at Noi Bai, so you can get on the road to Sapa the same day, rested and on schedule.
