What’s new in 2026: the Round of 32

The 2026 tournament is the first World Cup with 48 teams. To fit them into a knockout bracket, FIFA has added a Brand-New Round Before The Familiar Round Of 16.

The structure works like this:

  • 48 teams play the group stage in 12 groups of 4.
  • The top two from each group qualify directly (24 teams).
  • The eight best third-placed teams also qualify.
  • That gives you 32 teams to play the new Round of 32.
  • 16 winners advance to the Round of 16. The bracket then runs as normal.

The practical difference is one extra round. The Round of 32 plays out across six days, with 16 matches and 10 host cities running in parallel. There is no group stage drop-down: if you lose, you are out.

Round of 32 schedule in Vietnam time

The Round of 32 runs from very early Monday 29 June to early Saturday 4 July in Vietnam. Matchups will be confirmed once the group stage finishes on 27 June.

If you are flying out from Vietnam to catch a Round of 16 match, the early week is busy at Tan Son Nhat. Departure-side queues at SGN can build through the evening peak, and the new digital health declaration starts on 1 July. Many travellers heading to North America book a Tan Son Nhat Fast Track Service ahead of long-haul departures.

The third place match is often dismissed but tends to be a high-scoring, open game. Recent editions saw Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 in Qatar 2022 and Belgium beat England 2-0 in Russia 2018.

The 2026 Final closes an expanded format that runs for 39 days and 104 matches. MetLife Stadium has the highest capacity in the tournament at 82,500. Best knockout matches to watch live in Vietnam

Not every match sits at a viewer-friendly slot for Vietnamese fans. Here is how the kick-off windows break down across the knockout stage.

Viewing window (ICT)Match examplesVerdict
Late evening (23:00)Atlanta R32 + R16 startsMost convenient: catch before sleep
Pre-dawn (00:00-02:00)Houston, Dallas, NY/NJ, LA, the FinalManageable for night owls

Across the full knockout stage, the breakfast slot (06:00-08:30 ICT) accounts for around a third of matches and is the most practical option for office workers. Weekend mornings carry the heaviest concentration: the Round of 32 closes Saturday 4 July with three back-to-back games stretching from 01:00 to 08:30 ICT.

Travelling to North America for the World Cup knockouts

If you are flying out of Vietnam to attend a knockout match, the practical realities matter. The tournament window overlaps with peak northern summer traffic, peak European holiday traffic, and the start of Vietnam’s new arrival policy from 1 July.

A few things to keep in mind before booking:

  • The most direct Vietnam-North America connections leave from Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN).
  • Long-haul departures typically need a three-hour pre-flight buffer.
  • Evening immigration queues at SGN can stretch past 90 minutes during the summer peak.
  • A new Vietnam Digital Health Declaration Kicks In From 1 July 2026 and applies to most arriving travellers, which matters for the return leg.
  • Direct flights between Vietnam and the United States can run 18 hours or more.

For travellers heading to Round of 32 cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas or Mexico City, the SGN connection is usually fastest. Hanoi-based fans flying to Toronto or Vancouver normally route through Tokyo, Seoul or Taipei from Noi Bai International Airport.

For context on what a typical evening at Tan Son Nhat looks like, see our breakdown of Tan Son Nhat Immigration Wait Times in 2026.

Catching the Final, then catching your flight

The 2026 knockout stage is going to be a long three weeks for Vietnamese fans. Most matches land between 02:00 and 08:00 ICT, the Final is an after-midnight Monday morning game, and the new arrival policy from 1 July changes the return-leg routine for anyone flying back from North America.

For fans flying out from Vietnam to catch a knockout match, the SGN evening peak can add a frustrating 60-90 minutes to a long travel day. Fast Track Vietnam puts an agent at your terminal, escorts you through the priority lane at immigration and security, and gets you airside in 10-20 minutes.
